How to Become an OOW on Yachts: The Full MCA Route

Audio Fastlane guide banner: How to become an Officer of the Watch on yachts

To become an OOW on yachts is to move from crew to deck officer: the person trusted to run the bridge watch and keep the yacht and everyone aboard safe. It is the biggest single step in a deck career, and the route has a lot of moving parts. Here it is, in order.

Key points

  • The MCA OOW (Yachts) <3000GT certificate qualifies you to keep a navigational watch as an officer on yachts up to 3000 gross tonnes.
  • Sea service: 36 months of onboard yacht service including at least 365 days at sea on vessels of 15 metres or over, plus a Training Record Book (with one stated exemption).
  • You also need to be at least 19, with an underpinning RYA Yachtmaster (Offshore, or Coastal with the Coastal Skipper practical course), two written exams, ancillary courses and an ENG1 medical.
  • The Notice of Eligibility must be issued before you can book the oral exam, which is now held online.
  • Requirements change (MSN 1858 was amended in May 2026), so check the current MCA guidance before you commit time or money.

What the OOW (Yachts) <3000GT certificate is

It is an MCA certificate of competency that qualifies you to keep a navigational watch as an officer on yachts up to 3000 gross tonnes. Earning it means proving sea service, holding the right underpinning qualifications, passing written exams, completing a set of safety courses, and finally passing an oral examination with an MCA examiner.

The route at a glance

Stage What it involves
1. Sea service 36 months yacht service, 365 days at sea on vessels of 15 m+, Training Record Book
2. Underpinning qualification RYA Yachtmaster Offshore plus the Offshore shorebased course, or RYA Yachtmaster Coastal plus the Coastal Skipper practical course (IYT equivalents accepted)
3. Written exams General Ship Knowledge and Navigation & Radar
4. Ancillary courses STCW basic safety, survival craft and rescue boats, GMDSS GOC, Efficient Deck Hand, HELM (operational), ECDIS, ENG1
5. Notice of Eligibility and oral MCA issues the NoE, then you sit the oral exam

1. Sea service for OOW on yachts

You need a minimum of 36 months of onboard yacht service since the age of 16 (on vessels of any size), including at least 365 days of seagoing service on vessels of 15 metres or over in load line length. Those 365 days must include at least 250 days of actual seagoing service; the other 115 can be any mix of seagoing, standby service (no more than 14 consecutive days at a time, and never longer than the previous voyage) and yard service (up to 90 days). A day means at least four hours of working duty in 24. On top of that, a completed MCA Yacht Training Record Book (TRB) is required: a structured logbook of tasks signed off on board.

The TRB is mandatory. It is not a way to shorten the sea time. The one exemption is that you may not have to complete a TRB if you can demonstrate 36 months of actual seagoing service on vessels of 24 metres or over. Yacht service must be verified by the PYA or Nautilus before the MCA will issue your Notice of Eligibility, at least six months of your service must fall within the five years before you apply, and crew working in a dual deck-and-engine role have that time counted at 50 per cent.

2. Your underpinning Yachtmaster qualification

Before the OOW certificate, you need an RYA Yachtmaster Offshore certificate together with the Yachtmaster Offshore shorebased course certificate (you will want the Yachtmaster commercially endorsed to use it for paid work anyway). Because crew on large yachts often struggle to log the small-boat miles the Offshore exam needs, the MCA also accepts an RYA Yachtmaster Coastal certificate of competence accompanied by an RYA Coastal Skipper practical course completion certificate. This alternative started life as a temporary notice (MIN 580) and is now written into MSN 1858 itself. IYT equivalents (Master of Yachts Limited, or Master of Yachts Coastal/Mate) are accepted too. This is the practical, small-vessel foundation the officer ticket is built on.

3. The written exams

This is where most of your study time goes. The MCA written exams are General Ship Knowledge and Navigation & Radar, and you should also prepare thoroughly for the rules and the oral.

OOW (Yachts) <3000GT: what you are examined on

Exam Covers
General Ship Knowledge (written) Construction, stability, anchors and cables, emergencies
Navigation & Radar (written) Chartwork, passage planning, tides, radar and ARPA
MCA oral exam Watchkeeping, COLREGs, lights, shapes and sound signals, emergencies

COLREGs are not a separate written paper: they are tested hard at the oral, so learn them word for word.

  • General Ship Knowledge: anchors and cables, stability, construction, watertight integrity and emergencies.
  • Navigation & Radar: chartwork, passage planning, tides, and the practical use of radar and ARPA (theory and simulator).
  • COLREGs: the rule of the road, learned cold. See our plain-English COLREGs guide.
  • Oral preparation: learning to think and answer the way the examiner tests you. Our OOW oral exam guide covers it.

Your module passes are valid for three years and must still be in date when the certificate is issued, so plan the order of your exams and oral accordingly.

4. The ancillary courses

Alongside the exams, you need a set of supporting certificates. For OOW (Yachts) less than 3000GT these are:

  • STCW basic safety training: Personal Survival Techniques, Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Elementary First Aid, and Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (plus Security Awareness)
  • Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (a restricted yacht version is accepted, but it puts a limitation on your certificate)
  • GMDSS General Operator's Certificate
  • Efficient Deck Hand (EDH), which must have been issued at least 18 months before your certificate of competency is issued
  • Human Element Leadership and Management (HELM) at operational level
  • ECDIS (mandatory for OOW, Chief Mate and Master yacht certificates)
  • A valid ENG1 medical

The survival and fire-fighting certificates must have been completed or updated within the last five years when you apply.

5. The Notice of Eligibility and the oral exam

Once your sea service, exams and certificates are complete, you apply to the MCA for a Notice of Eligibility (NoE). You cannot book the oral until it is issued, and the MCA quotes around 28 days to process an application. The oral is the final gate: a one-to-one examination, now held online by video call with an MCA examiner, where COLREGs, lights, shapes, sound signals and buoyage have to be close to perfect. We break it down in how to pass your OOW oral exam.

This is an overview, not the legal text. The definitive requirements are in MSN 1858 (Amendment 2, in force from 18 May 2026) and associated notices such as MIN 690 for the oral exam process, which are updated from time to time. Always check the latest version and speak to an approved training provider.

The smart way to study for OOW

The candidates who pass first time are rarely the ones with the most shore leave. They are the ones who keep the syllabus ticking over while they work, with narrated material they can revise on watch and arrive at the exam already fluent.

Frequently asked questions

How much sea time do I need for OOW Yachts less than 3000GT?

You need a minimum of 36 months of onboard yacht service, including at least 365 days of seagoing service on vessels of 15 metres or over (at least 250 of those days must be actual seagoing service). A completed MCA Training Record Book is also required. It is mandatory, not a way to reduce the sea time. You are only excused the TRB if you can demonstrate 36 months of actual seagoing service on vessels of 24 metres or over. Always confirm against current MCA guidance.

What exams do you need for the yacht OOW certificate?

You must pass the MCA written exams for General Ship Knowledge and Navigation & Radar, complete the supporting courses, and then pass the OOW (Yachts) less than 3000GT oral examination.

What is a Notice of Eligibility?

A Notice of Eligibility (NoE) is the MCA's confirmation that you have met the requirements and may book your oral exam. You cannot sit the oral until your NoE has been issued.

How long are the written exam passes valid?

Three years from the date of issue of the pass certificate, and the passes must still be in date when your certificate of competency is issued. Plan your exams and oral so everything stays in date.

Do I need a Yachtmaster certificate before OOW?

Yes. You need an RYA Yachtmaster Offshore with the Offshore shorebased course certificate, or an RYA Yachtmaster Coastal with the Coastal Skipper practical course completion certificate (the route for crew on larger yachts), or an IYT equivalent, as the foundation for the OOW ticket.
